Taxes, fines deter potential buyers of abandoned Memphis real estate
Basically, the City/County mows, boards up, and eventually demolishes abandoned properties, adding the cost of these services as fines and tax liens against the property. I have no problem with that, especially for owners who can afford to maintain properties and choose to let them fall into ruin. But the government needs to decide whether to hold out to collect the fines or move on and start getting serious about the City’s blight.
Memphis has more than its share of blighted properties. In my opinion, if there is someone out there who is willing to buy and fix up an abandoned property– to address our city’s blight- they should not only have the fines and tax liens waived, but receive something like PILOT funds, which we seem so quick to pass out to those developing anything in the “cool” areas of town.
