I haven’t posted on this blog in a while. I did some posts on the Great Memphis Flood of 2011 on the Joe Spake Blog; I have been working with clients and trying to close my deals; and I thought I would try to hold out for MAAR’s April, 2001 sales figures to work that into this post, but, alas, the numbers are late. But it’s time to post something to let you know I am not a total sloth.
The Flood
I tried to photograph nearly every day as the water was rising. As expected, when the river crested, my interest in the flood waned, as did the interest to the throngs of disaster tourists who are probably now gawking at the rising waters in Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. Not bragging, but I had well over 100,000 picture and video views on my Flickr account between May 1 and May 12, topping out at 16,456 views on May 9. Here is my most viewed flood picture:
More flood pics and video here. Ironically, I completed negotiations on a contract for purchase of a home on Mud Island on May 10, the date of the Mississippi River‘s Crest. If Al Roker, in his waders, had turned 180 degrees in the waist deep water, cameras would have shown that 99.9% of the housing on the island was high and dry.
The Grizzlies
I am not a sports fan. I don’t follow any sports, and I don’t apologize for it; but to see a team bring the City together the way the Grizzlies have in the past few weeks is really inspiring and gives me even more pride in Memphis. If it takes sports to pull our often divided community together, count me as a fan.
The Presidential Visit
President Obama’s visit today was an historic event, not only for the 155 graduating seniors at Booker T. Washington High School, but for our entire city. His words, as well as the words of the students gave me a warm feeling about the future. What can we do to keep that positive vibe we all felt today?
I will be back with those April real estate sales stats as soon as I get them.
