Some of the most interesting bungalows in the USA are in Midtown Memphis. Many are referred to as Craftsman bungalows, however, not all of those were of the true Sears-Roebuck house kit origins. There are a lot of definitions of bungalow, but most in this country think of them as a single story (perhaps with a partial second story) home, popularized in the first quarter of the 20th century, and typified by a covered front porch, front gables and low pitched roof. The vast majority of the bungalows in Memphis were built between 1921 and 1925 and are distributed through all of Midtown’s neighborhoods and as far east as Highland. I don’t know what drove this trend, but it probably had something to do with Memphis’ growing industrial economy and the need for housing for the middle-class.
Current Midtown Memphis Bungalows listings are priced between about $30,000 and $300,000 – quite a pricing bargain compared to the Mission Hills, CA bungalow, featured in the video below. Download the list. (Contact me if you would like more details.)
I have been living and working in the historic Midtown neighborhoods for quite a while now. If an older home is right for you, you will know it as soon as you walk through the door, and you will put aside thoughts of walk-in closets and low-maintenance. Jim Klinge, “Realtor Jim” does videos and commentary on homes for sale in the San Diego area. This video first caught my eye because of the price of the house: $750,000 for a 1600+ square foot “Craftsman” bungalow in Mission Hills. Jim’s commentary is a bit cynical and points out a lot of old house features and complaints, but he can’t help letting the charm of the home come through. Based on the size and upgrades of the bungalow, I would imagine it would list for around $250,000 in Memphis.
