Notes I made while observing and participating in the National Association of Realtors® Convention last week in New Orleans:
Funny that the strangers who most aggressively interrupt your online life wanting you to be their Facebook friend don’t want to interact when you encounter them IRL [in real life]. I think my FB friends list may need a bit of trimming.
Great to see so many of my social media brothers and sisters at BarCamp, at Beaches on Bourbon, and around town. Too many to name – keeping it REAL.
Trends – vision or just reporting? Are trend reporters visionaries? I think not.
The median age of Realtors® is 54, but the people staffing most of the booths at the NAR trade show look to be around 30.
When you toss your business card, unsolicited, on the table in front of me without saying a word or making eye contact, are you offended if I don’t pick it up an look at it?
Can you really call it a networking reception when you run out of food in the first 45 minutes, drinks are some of the most expensive in town, and a DJ is playing funk music at a volume that overpowers any conversation?
Lots of magic bullet salespeople on the trade show floor. Tried to count how many times “social media” was mentioned. Obviously this year’s most popular brand of snake oil.
QR, QR, QR, QR, QR,QR! The best real estate QR code vendor didn’t have a booth at the show.
Enjoyed working the Telivant booth with my colleagues, Patrick, Dave, Gary, and Missy. Telivant offers a true alternative solution for real estate technology learning.
Get a bunch of type-A people together, add a little alcohol, and the conversation becomes a yelling match.
After putting me in a room with the worst possible view in the French Quarter, and putting folks with an incessantly barking dog in the next room, the hotel had a note on my final bill requesting that I review them on Yelp, and suggesting I give them 5 stars.
Traveling by Amtrak train from Memphis to New Orleans was a great experience. Make sure and get a private cabin if you want to travel in style.
Missed David Hasselhoff. Was rumbling through the Mississippi Delta on the City of New Orleans about the time Earth, Wind and Fire hit the stage at NAR.
Engage or die. Question not are you using social media , but how well? Social media ROI – you are still in business 5 years from now… Engage… everyone is an expert, who is a leader? [thinking of Brian Solis and ErikQualman and what they would think of the Exhibition Hall].
Blue tooth’s flashing. ties and suits. gold R pins and plastic bling.
Ready to get back on the train.
