I have just listed this 2 Bedroom /1 Bath home, but this isn’t just a typical house in Midtown. As far as I can tell, this “dove grey” and “maize yellow”, all metal jewel in Midtown is one the last 2 of its breed in Memphis. Constructed after World War II as affordable, low maintenance, housing, the home was purchased in 2005 and loving restored by the current owner. There were a handful of Lustrons in Memphis but most were remodeled, or removed, leaving this house and one in the High Point Terrace area as the only pure examples of the product left in Memphis. Yep, it’s all porcelain-steel: roof, interior walls, pocket doors, gutters and trim.
Lustron House – East MemphisThere is a vast amount of information about Lustron Houses in the Wikipedia article. That’s where I found out that this is the Westchester Deluxe Model. There is a huge network of Lustron historians and owners, dedicated to documenting and indexing the survivors (just Google “Lustron”). Here’s a pretty good example, The Lustron Connection. Or you could check out the Lustron Preservation site. This house is documented there in the Lustron Locator.
