I am continually amazed at the widespread criticism of real estate commissions. I would like for the critics to remember that a lawyer who wins a civil case for his client usually gets 33% of the judgment. Managers of musicians get 15-25%. In the world of fine arts the galleries/management take 30-50%. Mssrs. Levitt and Dubner who wrote the best seller FREAKONOMICS suggest the real estate agents are worth little more than an hourly rate for their work and expertise. This position, that REALTORS charge too much for services, has been picked in the leading media, both print and electronic. I doubt that Levitt and Dubner’s literary agents work for less than double digit commissions. The same for the representatives of columnists, anchor persons and commentators.
It makes the real estate commission look like a good deal!
