I want to endorse Nextdoor as a great way to communicate with your neighbors and to add to the unity of your neighborhood. Everyone who has been active within their neighborhood in any way appreciate communication about what is going on – crime, events, vendor recommendations, items for sale – in their immediate neighborhood.
From the Nextdoor website:
Nextdoor is a private social network for you, your neighbors and your community. It’s the easiest way for you and your neighbors to talk online and make all of your lives better in the real world. And it’s free.
Thousands of neighborhoods are already using Nextdoor to build happier, safer places to call home.
People are using Nextdoor to:
- Quickly get the word out about a break-in
- Organize a Neighborhood Watch Group
- Track down a trustworthy babysitter
- Find out who does the best paint job in town
- Ask for help keeping an eye out for a lost dog
- Find a new home for an outgrown bike
- Finally call that nice man down the street by his first name
Nextdoor’s mission is to use the power of technology to build stronger and safer neighborhoods.
My favorite feature of Nextdoor is the ability to set up micro-neighborhoods. We have a private network for folks who live on our block. Chances are, your neighborhood already has a network; if not, why not start one? It’s very easy to set up an account, and you can be as private or public as you wish to be. There are plenty of filters, so you can get emergency notifications immediately or less urgent information in digest form.

I love Nextdoor. It’s a great way to give and receive referrals for professionals, and our neighborhood trading information has led to people who broke into a few houses being caught, and also putting coordinated pressure on city departments to take care of things that were of concern.
