Merriam -Webster online defines Comfort Food as, “food that is satisfying because it is prepared in a simple or traditional way and reminds you of home, family, or friends.” I would add that it is also reasonably priced, accessible, convenient, and doesn’t involve a national chain. Midtown Memphis is the home of some of the best comfort food in the country; so I want to share my top 4 go-to comfort food places. Be sure to add your favorites in the comments section.

Bar-B-Q: – Paynes Bar-B-Q – in a city famous for it’s pork Barbecue, Payne’s chopped pork sandwich sets the standard. Perfectly pit-smoked pork shoulder topped with a mustardy, almost irradescent slaw, and your choice of hot or mild sauce. Paynes is truly a no-frills bbq joint, and in my opinion, the standard by which all others are measured. There are other BBQ places I love, but I will address them in later posts. Recommendation: Chopped Pork Sandwich.
Burgers: Top’s Barbecue – well it’s a barbecue place too, but I go to the Union Avenue location for their burgers, which will take you back to the burger joints you knew as a kid. And i am not talking about Micky D’s. Recommendation: Cheeseburger, all the way.
Deli: Fino’s– Italian Deli- hefty sanwiches on great crunchy bagettes (or you can order soft bread) as well as a couple of chalkboard hot entrees, salads, soups and amazing Italian desserts. Recommendation: New York Club or South Philly sandwiches.
Wild Card: Arepa and Salsa -Venezuelan food based around arepas(a thick corn tortilla) and tostones (fried plantains, stuffed with a variety of tasty goodies… Recommendation: Veggie Queen Arepa, Tostones Pabellon
These are my top 4 Midtown Memphis go-to places. But that’s just the beginning of the list. I know I have more favorites: Kwik Chek, Little Italy, the Cupboard, and lots of others.
