For Sale – Coffey Grounds 672 N Belvedere, Memphis
Back in 1936 Ben and Lula Coffey bought a property on North Belvedere on the banks of Lick creek. The Coffeys, amateur ornithologists appreciated the .56 acre property for its natural setting and developed it with more trees and plants to attract birds and butterflies. The property came to be known as Coffey Grounds, and was popular with area birders. The property was an official birding station up until Ben’s death in 1993.
There have been lots of changes since 1936: Lick creek has been channelized, the VECA (Vollintine Evergreen Community Association) Greenline has replaced the railroad tracks, and VECA has become an even more popular Midtown Memphis neighborhood, but the Coffey Grounds is still there – a 2 bedroom brick cottage on .56 acres of mature native trees, flowering plants, and productive fruit trees.
672 N Belvedere is for sale. The property runs from Belvedere east to Evergreen and is bordered by Lick Creek and the VECA Greenline. I saw a red-tail hawk on my first visit, and the current owners say owls nest on the property.
